Fifth Sunday of Pentecost

Fifth Sunday of Pentecost

Introduction to the week –

The thread running through our readings this week is simple and profound: God’s faithfulness frees us, and that freedom becomes a blessing for others.

Jeremiah reminds us that truth is not always the most convenient word, but it is always the word that leads us back to God. The psalmist sings of a covenant love that does not waver. Paul tells us that grace is not permission to drift, but power to live differently—lives shaped by righteousness, compassion, and purpose. And Jesus brings it all home with an image so small we might miss it: a cup of cold water offered to “one of these little ones.”

In God’s kingdom, nothing done in love is insignificant. Every act of welcome, every gesture of care, every moment of truth‑telling becomes a way Christ is made known among us. This week, may we notice the small mercies we receive—and the small mercies we are called to give.

Introduction to our readings –

The welcome of baptism is for all God’s children. This baptismal gift sets us free from the power of sin and death. In today’s gospel, Christ promises that the disciple who gives a cup of cold water to the little ones serves Christ himself. From worship we are sent on our baptismal mission: to serve the little ones of this world and to be a sign of God’s merciful welcome.
